History of the Bulls

The Bulls were formed for the 2006-2007 season as the St. Basil Bulls, a CYO (Catholic Youth Organization) club. The club was the brainchild of Jeff Grable and blessed by Rev. Robert A. McLaughlin of St. Basil the Great Catholic Church in Kimberton, PA. The original club was open to any young, Catholic player in the Philadelphia Archdiocese that wanted to play ice hockey. The teams played their games in the now-defunct BSIHL (Berks Scholastic Ice Hockey League) and had two teams (K-2nd and 3rd-5th). In their first season, the K-2nd team claimed their first championship!

The 2007-2008 Season “St. Basils Bulls”
For the 2007-2008 season, the St. Basil Bulls continued with the same formula that brought them success the previous year. As a result, at the end of the season, both the K-2nd and 3rd-5th teams captured the BSIHL championships!

The 2008-2009 Season “St. Basils Bulls”
For the 2008-2009 season, the BSIHL dissolved and reformed to create the EPSHL (East Penn Scholastic Hockey League). The Bulls had only a single team in the EPSHL for this season, the 3rd – 5th team. Once again, the St. Basil Bulls won the championship after an undefeated regular season and play-offs!

The 2009-2010 Season “St. Basils Bulls”
After three seasons of great success, the club re-evaluated their original goals. While winning championships was fun, the board decided it was time to take the club in a new direction. As a result of this decision, the club would no longer play as part of the EPSHL and would, instead, play as an independent team. The board agreed that playing as an independent team would allow the Bulls to select and play opponents that were more closely matched to their own skill level, thus providing greater development for the players. The Squirt Bulls team had a very successful 2009-2010 season with a final record of 11-2-1. The decision to go independent was considered a success by all Bulls participants.

Spring 2010 “Bulls Selects”
In the Spring of 2010 the Bulls developed a separate Spring/Summer Developmental program to cater to the needs of players looking for extra ice time and instruction in the off season. This program is run completely different then the Fall/Winter program and was named Bulls Selects. This program takes any type of player and works to develop that players skills. The Spring/Summer teams practice twice a week; one practice is with an outside skills instructor that develops individual skills and the other practice is with a team coach that works on hockey concepts. Every team participates in tournaments and non league games. In the inaugural season of the Spring Program the Bulls boasted four teams; Pee Wee AA, Pee Wee A, Squirt AA, Squirt A.

The 2010-2011 Season “St. Basils Bulls”
In the Fall/Winter of 2010-2011 the St. Basil Bulls returned to their independent format. They had players from all over the DVHL and AYHL teams representing St. Basil’s school. The schedule was similar to the schedule before with one practice a week and an average of 12 games. The Bulls had a Pee Wee team played and independent Pee Wee A/AA schedule. The team finished the season with a record of 7-4-1. The Bulls also fielded a Squirt team this season that played a AAA/AA schedule. This was the first season the Bulls played such a high level schedule. The St. Basil squirt team held their own just fine ending up with a record of 9-3.

Spring 2011 “Bulls Selects”
Word traveled of the Bulls previous success and their player development skills were recognized. In the Spring of 2011 the Bulls Select program grew to 10 teams! The Bulls Select fielded teams at Mite, Squirt AA, Squirt A, Squirt B, Pee Wee AA, Pee Wee A, Pee Wee B, Bantam A, Bantam B, and Midget U16 A. The Bulls Select kept with their proven process of skills clinics mixed with team practices.
